Life Cycle

Bar/Bat Mitzvah

B’nai Mitzvah is available for students enrolled in our Religious School. Beyond 4th-7th grade Hebrew, the student studies privately for five months  before working in the sanctuary with Rabbi Kalfus.

Our 10th grade Confirmation on Erev Shavuot concludes a year of study with Rabbi Kalfus, and features a four-day Jewish Heritage trip to New York City. Our Confirmation students create and lead their Confirmation Service.

We are pleased to offer Religious School through 12th grade. Our High School Seniors study the second semester with Rabbi Kalfus and write and lead their Spring Graduation Shabbat Service.

Rabbi Kalfus offers pre-marital discussions using the PREPARE/ENRICH program. He works with a couple for 9-12 months, encouraging the couple to write much of their wedding ceremony.

Rabbi Kalfus will officiate at weddings (and all life-cycle events) within the congregation’s membership. He does not officiate for those not affiliated with a synagogue.

Brit Milah and Babynaming

Babynamings and circumcision celebrations with rabbinic officiation may take place in the home or the Synagogue. Namings often take place on the Bima with the rabbi during a Shabbat Service. While a rabbi does need to be present at either, Rabbi Kalfus often works with parents to create their own personal and meaningful ceremony.

Rabbi Kalfus works with students interested in conversion for about a year. They are encouraged to take his Introduction to Judaism course, offered every fall, and attend Sabbath and Festival Worship. Students work individually with the Rabbi, at their own pace and schedule.

Funerals and Hospital Visits

Rabbi Kalfus will officiate at funerals for Temple members and their immediate family only. Recognizing that this is a difficult time, the family should contact the Rabbi whenever a family member is ill so that he can make hospital visits, and in the event of a death help the family through the funeral.

Rabbi Kalfus is not a trained or professional counselor. He is, however, always happy to meet with members to discuss personal problems or issues.
